Saunas

The term SAUNA originates from Finland and denotes a type of bath, where the body is first warmed in hot air and then cooled in cold shower.

With its stages of warming and cooling, sauna has a favorable effect on the skin, respiration, heart, blood pressure, glands and nerves as well as on the emotional state. Warming and cooling processes purify and renovate the skin, stimulate cell regeneration, thoroughly moisten the skin and increase blood circulation. The warming process affects breathing by achieving an excellent blood circulation of the respiratory tract mucus and relaxation of bronchial tubes, while the cooling process makes up for oxygen deficiency caused by spending time in a warm space.

Sauna treatment has been known to people since prehistoric times in form of various refreshing baths. Baths have been succeeded by the Finnish sauna, which gained its popularity in the 20th century when it spread from Scandinavia to the countries all over the world. Finnish sauna is also called genuine sauna, since it served as a model for all the subsequent forms of saunas known to us to day.

Depending on the amount of humidity, we distinguish four types of saunas:

  • Dry sauna: the temperature in the sauna room ranges from 70°C to 100°C, and the relative air humidity does not exceed 10%.
  • Humid sauna: the temperature in the sauna room ranges from 70°C to 90°C, and the relative humidity between 25% and 35%, which is achieved by pouring water over heated stones in the sauna heater.
  • Steam “bio” sauna: the temperature in the sauna room ranges from 45°C to 65°C, and the relative humidity between 40% and 65%.
  • Infrared sauna: the temperature in the sauna room ranges from 50°C to 60°C.

Sauna procedure

Sauna is recommended by doctors for various reasons. The body reacts well to the sauna therapy, because it is exposed to high temperatures for just a short time. Sauna session should not last longer than 15 minutes. Before entering the sauna, visitors are expected to shower (without using soap) and dry themselves with a towel or a sheet. While in the sauna, it is recommended to lie on the highest bench possible, and only advisable to sit up for about two minutes before leaving the room. It is best to let the legs rest on the bench as well, to provide them with the same air temperature as the other parts of the body.

Ohlajanje

This is followed by a 10 to 15-minute cooling period. After exiting the sauna, it is necessary to move outside in the fresh air to cool the respiratory tract and provide the blood with sufficient oxygen, since the lack of fresh air impairs the blood flow. This is followed by a cold body firming shower or short bath. While veins contract in response to cold stimuli, cold water may not be used to shock the body. A cold shower or bath should always be followed by a warm foot bath to achieve the feeling of warmth throughout the entire body, including the head. After a short rest, you can enter the sauna again and repeat the sauna procedure. More than three successive visits to the sauna are not good for the body; on the contrary, they wear the body down excessively.

Due to its succession of stimuli, sauna is extremely beneficial to the body, since it activates the body parts without straining and fills the body with a balanced sense of well-being. Harmlessness of sauna and its positive effects have been proven on numerous occasions and in various countries, such as Finland and Germany. But to be able to use the sauna successfully and beneficially, it is crucial to follow the established rules.
